Exporting from Baby tracker (com.amila.parenting), and bringing it here

This app emails a .abt backup rather than a spreadsheet. That matters, because the importer reads CSV files today.

Getting your file out of Baby tracker

  1. In the app settings, ask it to send your backup. It arrives by email.
  2. The file is a .abt backup: a zip holding a baby.json file rather than a spreadsheet.
  3. Bubs Daily reads CSV files today, so a .abt file will not open here yet. If the app can give you a CSV, that will import.

Export format: A .abt file — a zip containing baby.json. Not a spreadsheet.

What the importer can read

The importer reads CSV files, so a .abt file will not open here yet. There is no reader for a zipped baby.json, and we would rather say so than let you find out after you have saved the file. A spreadsheet you export or build yourself does import, column by column, with the same preview and the same undo.

How the two compare

Two columns, and only what we can stand behind. The right-hand column carries a fact about Baby tracker (com.amila.parenting) only where we have read it from a source and noted the date. Everywhere else it says so.

What happens to your file

You are handing over the only copy of something that cannot be written again, to people you heard of four minutes ago. So here is every step, in order, and what is saved at each one.

  1. You choose the file. Nothing is read from your phone until you do.
  2. You see every column found in it, the field each one maps to, and three real values from your own file. Columns we cannot place are listed and skipped, never guessed at.
  3. You see the first twenty rows exactly as they will be saved, with the counts above them, before anything is written.
  4. Rows we could not read are counted, listed, and downloadable as a file. Nothing is dropped quietly.
  5. Entries that look like ones you already have are shown and left out by default. Nothing is merged and nothing is deleted.
  6. One import is one batch. You can undo the whole batch, at any time, with no expiry.
  7. An import is shared with the people you have already invited, the same as anything you log by hand. Bringing a year of records across is also an act of sharing a year of records with them.

Nothing is saved until you press Import. You can undo the whole batch afterwards.

How we handle your information is set out in the privacy policy.

What this does not do yet

  • A new entry saved without signal is kept on your phone and sent when you next have a connection. Editing or deleting an entry, and importing a file, still need one.
  • Getting your data out is free: More, then Export, as a CSV or JSON file. It does not sit behind the paywall.
  • Nudges appear on the Today screen while the app is open. They do not buzz your phone.
  • The one-page record for health-visitor reviews is not finished.
  • The importer reads CSV files. We have checked how two apps export, and only one of those two hands you a CSV. If yours is not on the list, a spreadsheet still imports.
  • Some things have nowhere to go. A third milk type — donor milk, fortifier — keeps its original words in the notes rather than being turned into something it is not.
  • Our duplicate check is new, and it has not been tested against a real file from every app. It leaves suspected duplicates out rather than guessing.
